Compare Health Insurance is a comparison website and does not give financial advice. Quote requests made through this site are handled by our advice partner, Curemed (Pty) Ltd, FSP 44098, an authorised financial services provider. We compare only products available through our advice partner, so this comparison is not independent of it. Every figure is from the named public source on the stated date.

In short

  • Health insurance pays mainly for care outside hospital: network GP visits, medicine, blood tests and x-rays.
  • We compare 5 day-to-day plans from Discovery Flexicare and Momentum Health4Me, priced from R459 to R818 a month for one adult.
  • Hospital cover is limited to defined emergencies and is an optional extra on both ranges.
  • Health insurance is not medical aid. About three in twenty South Africans had medical aid in 2024 (Stats SA).

Important: This is not a medical scheme and the cover is not the same as that of a medical scheme. This policy is not a substitute for medical scheme membership.

What does health insurance cover, and what does it not?

Health insurance in South Africa is sold under insurance law, not the Medical Schemes Act. The plans we compare focus on everyday care at network providers. They do not cover planned hospital admissions, and they do not have to pay Prescribed Minimum Benefits. Read health insurance vs medical aid for the full difference.

Common questions

What is health insurance in South Africa?

Health insurance is an insurance policy, not a medical scheme. It mainly pays for day-to-day care such as network GP visits, medicine, blood tests and x-rays, and some plans add limited cover for accidents and emergencies. It does not have to pay Prescribed Minimum Benefits the way a medical scheme must.

How much does health insurance cost?

The lowest published price we compare is Flexicare Core at R459 a month for the main member (Discovery, read on 21 October 2026). Plans that add accident and emergency cover cost more.

Does health insurance cover hospital stays?

Not in the way a medical aid does. Discovery Flexicare has no hospital cover unless you add Discovery Emergency Cover, which only pays for defined emergencies. Momentum Health4Me can add accident, heart attack and stroke cover plus a daily hospital cash payment. None of the plans we compare covers planned operations.

Can I have health insurance and medical aid at the same time?

Some insurers do not allow it. Discovery states that Flexicare cannot be held together with Discovery Health Medical Scheme membership. Ask the Advisor before you join.
