What waiting periods apply to health insurance in South Africa?
Compare Health Insurance is a comparison website and does not give financial advice. Quote requests made through this site are handled by our advice partner, Curemed (Pty) Ltd, FSP 44098, an authorised financial services provider. We compare only products available through our advice partner, so this comparison is not independent of it. Every figure is from the named public source on the stated date.
Unless Discovery approves otherwise, on Flexicare you wait 1 month before you can claim any benefit, 3 months for dentistry and optometry, and 12 months for maternity, HIV and chronic medicine. A 12 month waiting period may also be applied to any condition you had before joining. Discovery Emergency Cover lists a 1 month waiting period. Momentum states that waiting periods apply to several Health4Me benefits, but its 2026 brochures do not say how long they are. These figures come from the insurers' own 2026 documents, read on 22 October 2026.
In short
- Flexicare: 1 month general, 3 months for dentistry, optometry and the FlexiFund, 12 months for maternity, HIV and chronic conditions.
- Discovery Emergency Cover: 1 month. Discovery does not state an exception for accidents.
- Momentum Health4Me: waiting periods apply to several benefits; lengths are not published in the 2026 brochures.
- Discovery applies waiting periods even if you come from a medical scheme.
This is not a medical scheme and the cover is not the same as that of a medical scheme. This policy is not a substitute for medical scheme membership.
What is a waiting period?
Discovery defines it this way: "A waiting period means that you or your dependants cannot claim for the associated healthcare services during the waiting period." Discovery describes health insurance as governed by long-term and short-term insurance laws. Each insurer sets its own waiting periods in its policy terms, which is why they differ between the plans below.

Are accidents and emergencies covered from day one?
Not on the evidence published. Flexicare and Health4Me day-to-day options do not cover hospital treatment. For the emergency add-ons:
- Discovery Emergency Cover: the 2026 Flexicare Core leaflet lists an "Emergency Cover Waiting Period" of 1 month, and the 2026 brochure lists a 1 month "Trauma benefit waiting period". Neither states an exception for accidents.
- Health4Me Base and Standard: Momentum's 2026 brochures state no waiting period for accident and emergency cover, but they do not say cover starts on day 1 either. Ask the Advisor to confirm the start date for accident and emergency claims in writing.
Do dependants added later serve waiting periods?
- Discovery: newborns join without waiting periods if they are added within 90 days of birth.
- For employer and household employer policies, Discovery's 2026 brochures state that a dependant who joins 60 days after the main member has a three-month general waiting period, unless a two-month waiting period concession for a new employer exists or a window period applies for the employer.
- Momentum's 2026 Health4Me brochures do not state rules for dependants added later.
What happens to waiting periods if my cover stops?
Discovery states that if you or your dependants have a break of more than 30 days in membership, all waiting periods are applied again when you reapply. Momentum's 2026 brochures do not state a rule for breaks in cover.
How can I check this myself?
- Open the insurer documents listed under Sources. Discovery prints its waiting period table on the "Underwriting" or "Waiting periods" page of each 2026 leaflet and brochure.
- For Health4Me, search the brochure for "Waiting periods apply". Each benefit marked this way has a waiting period that the brochure does not quantify.
- Ask the Advisor for the waiting periods that will apply to each person on your policy, in writing, before you accept the quote.
- When the policy starts, check the waiting periods on your policy schedule against what you were told.

Common questions
Can I see a GP in my first month on Flexicare?
Not on the policy. Discovery applies a 1 month general waiting period on all Flexicare benefits, unless otherwise approved.
Does Momentum Health4Me have waiting periods?
Yes. Momentum marks specialist, chronic, HIV, dentistry, optometry, hospital cash and maternity lump sum benefits, and natural death on the funeral benefit, with "waiting periods apply" or "waiting periods may apply". Its 2026 brochures do not state how long they are. Ask the Advisor to confirm them in writing.
If I leave a medical aid, do I still serve waiting periods on Flexicare?
Yes. Discovery states that waiting periods are applied to all new Flexicare policies, including members of previous medical schemes and health insurance products.
Can a waiting period be waived?
Discovery lists its waiting periods as applying "unless otherwise approved", and its employer brochure refers to a two-month waiting period concession for a new employer and to employer window periods. Momentum does not state any waiver in its 2026 brochures.
